Day 8 Salzburg, Austria

Day 8
Salzburg, Austria
Monday, October 8, 2018

Today started at breakfast with Sharon & Nelson Hahn.
Here is a map to get an idea of where we'll be today.
The bus ride to Salzburg was just over 3 hours.

It was a very foggy morning.
You will notice soon how quickly the fog lifts.

We took a coach bus to Salzburg for an all-day tour.
I believe those are the Alps in the distance.

Our tour guide, Philip.
He is about to take us into the Mirabell Gardens, where scenes in "The Sounds of Music" were filmed.

This was our first stop in the Mirabell Gardens.

I took this picture because this was one of the spots where Sound of Music was filmed.
It's in the distance so not too easy to see, but it's the steps in the background where the filming took place.

Downtown Salzburg.
At the end of the road is an elevator to the top of the wall.
You will see some views from there later in this blog.

Translation: Mozart's Birth House.
The actual place is the 4th floor where the windows are open.

Walking from town square looking back at the clock tower.
It was right at noon and the bells began to ring out.

One of many squares in downtown Salzburg.
This is the square where I took the video above.

Another site from the Sound of Music movie.
This is toward the end of the film where the Nazi flag hung down over the entrance.

We liked all the statues in front of this church so we paused to have our picture taken.

This is "the Domplatz, dominated by the 249-foot 17th-century Dom and St. Peter's Abbey, where Mozart premiered the Great Mass in C Minor in 1783." (Viking Guide p. 23)
St. Peter's Abbey located in an active monastery.
This is also where Austria's oldest restaurant is located and where we ate lunch and had a nice little performance/concert played out for us.

The Monastery Cemetery.
Note the catacombs set in the solid rock wall.
One our way to the lift (elevator) to take some panoramic photos we stopped by to pick up some Mozart's candies for Susan. We also had one each and they, indeed, are very tasty.
There are quite a few imitations of these Mozart ball candies, but this is where  you can buy the originals.
Once up on the top of the cliff this is what we tried to capture...
Far Left
Far Right
Middle
If you can piece these together you'll have a panoramic view of Salzburg.

Note the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress on top of the hill to the right.

This is the view of the river and the downtown area.
The fortress is to the right.
After lunch we had a little time before returning to the bus to visit another cathedral.
Wow!

On the way back to the ship by bus crossing the RR tracks.

A very common design across the countryside.

On the way back we stopped by a fortress they say is the Longest Castle Fortress in the world.
This is the front of the castle.

We drove past the front and half way down the side looking across the valley.

Closing out the day, watching the sun set.

Dinner tonight.
A very good day!
End of Day 8 Salzburg, Austria
